BEGINNER COURSES
LEarn to Sail - level one
ABOUT THE COURSE 
This is the perfect beginner sailing course for a 9-12 year old with little or no previous sailing experience and interested in water sports, or simply trying something new!

​Participants learn the basics of sailing through fun, adventure and teamwork in a safe environment, forming a solid sailing foundation.  Your budding sailor will be taught the necessary skills to skipper an O'pen Skiff dinghy single-handed, under the supervision of one of our skilled coaches, experiencing a feeling of achievement they will be proud of.
 
A boat, lifejacket, helmet, team vest, and spray jacket are all provided for participants in this course.  We do ask sailors to bring with them a wetsuit, beanie or hat, poly props (colder months especially), booties (neoprene boat shoes/old trainers that can get wet), sun cream, togs and to be prepared for adventure!

 
PREREQUISITES
Entrants typically enter this course at any age from 9 to 12 years old and must display confidence in the water.  Swimming competency is assessed at the beginning of the course with a 25m sea swim activity.

ABOUT THE COURSE
This course is tailored towards those who have completed RCSF Learn to Sail One and are keen to increase their knowledge and sailing skillset in a fun environment.
 
The course will take ideas and skills touched on in the first course and develop them to ensure your sailor is learning the correct techniques to cement a solid sailing foundation.  Learn to Sail Two sailors may experience other types of boats and they will also touch on the very basics of how a sailing race works.

A boat, helmet and life jacket are all provided for participants in this course.

Entrants typically enter this course following the RCSF Learn to Sail One course.

LEARN TO SAIL - level three
ABOUT THE COURSE
The Level Three course suits returning participant's that have completed Learn to Sail Level One and Learn to Sail Level Two.  Sailors previously enrolled in Level Two during Term One of this year should consider this course.  This course focuses on introducing beginner racing skills in a relaxed environment.

Don't forget, like any sport, some sailors will develop competitive streaks whereas others may not.  Appreciating this difference in the individual is a unique skill of ours at the RCSF and we continue to dedicate a large focus on enjoyment and non-conventional activities and games in this stage of learning.  Skill acquisition through enjoyment will help provide these sailors an opportunity to take part in club racing confidently in the future should they desire.

Boat use is still included in the course fee however sailors at this level should provide their own sailing clothing including helmet and lifejacket.

Entrants typically enter the Learn to Sail Level Three program following the RCSF Learn to Sail Level Two program.

learn to windsurf
ABOUT THE COURSE
In this course, participants will focus on the fundamentals of how to windsurf, developing a sound understanding of these concepts in a safe, fun environment with experienced windsurfing instructors.

Equipment charter (board, fins, rig and sail) is included in the course fee.

Sailors can enrol in this course multiple times.  The coach will cater to your abilities and work on planing, pumping and harness work as you progress.


PREREQUISITES
Entrants should be aged 10+ and must be confident in the water.

learn to winG
ABOUT THE COURSE
In this course, participants will focus on the fundamentals of how to wing.  The first stage of this is learning to Foil which is done by being towed on a foiling board.  They will then learn about Wing control, then put the two skills together to learn to Wing Foil, and finally they will learn to gybe.

Sailors may enrol in this course multiple times, with the coaches catering to their individual ability.

Equipment will be provided - board, foil and wing.


PREREQUISITES
Entrants should be aged between 13 and 18 and must be able to show competency in the following:
  • 200m run along the beach
  • swimming (100m in the sea)
  • tread water for 60 seconds
  • have completed an RCSF sailing or windsurfing course OR be able to demonstrate good knowledge of the wind

Additional equipment you will need to provide:
  • helmet
  • well fitted life jacket or impact vest (preferably neoprene)
  • booties
  • wetsuit (not boardies)

adult learn to sail 
ABOUT THE COURSE
If you're becoming increasingly jealous watching youngsters’ blast around the bay and you're keen to get out on the water to give sailing a go, then this is the course for you!

Our Learn to Sail Adult course is specifically tailored for adults who are new to the sport of sailing, with a mixture of content that will help develop an understanding of sailing. 

Working together in a safe environment, ​our team of great coaches will guide you through the fundamentals in sailing at your own pace and in an easy to understand manor, providing a solid sailing foundation.
​
Boat and equipment charter (lifejacket and helmet included) are included in your course fee and there is no expectation to join the Manly Sailing Club at this stage.  Learning will be done in Hobie Waves, and if the conditions are favourable and there is interest, a sailor may have the opportunity to sail a Weta or a single-handed boat in the final lessons.

Adults should bring along these additional items for going on the water; a snug fitting wetsuit, neoprene boat shoes or old trainers that can get wet, a hat, sun cream and that can-do attitude!


PREREQUISITES
Entrants are typically aged 16+ and should be confident around the water.  Please note a minimum of three participants is required for the course to run.

PLEASE NOTE
This is an introduction to sailing using RCSF boats, and to take dinghy sailing further, it will require you to own your own boat.

INTERMEDIATE COURSES
Development Program - O'PEN SKIFF
ABOUT THE COURSES
The O'pen Skiff Development Program is suitable for those who are moving out of Learn to Sail Level Three or those previous Development sailors who want to develop their sailing without the competitive focus of racing.  This course emphasizes the fun aspects of sailing, including destination sails, speed runs, and engaging sailing games.

Sailors entering this course should provide their own boat and equipment although we will do our best to make available charters to those who are still in the market for their first O'pen Skiff.  
 
In certain circumstances, the RCSF may approach and award scholarship(s) to one or more sailor(s) in this course.  This will be on a case-by-case basis and include boat use and course fees for one season.

Sailors must have completed Learn to Sail Level Three.

Sailors at this stage must also be members of the Manly Sailing Club as they start to show keen interest in club activities with their friends.  There is lot's on so don't miss out!

intro to double-handed sailing
ABOUT THE COURSE
Sailing solo doesn't do it for you? Try our new Intro to Double-handed sailing course. This course is aimed to introduce sailors to multiple double-handed boats like the RS Feva, Hobie Wave and VX Two. They will learn to work together with other sailors, how to trim a jib, gennaker, and many other skills that comes with sailing bigger, multi-person boats.
 
This is a Development level course where prior sailor experience is required. It is a learning and fun-focused course aiming to develop skills and raise awareness of some of the many sailboats that are out there.
 
Finding a partner before the course is not required. They will sail with most of the group members at some point during the term doing a variety of roles on the boats.

PREREQUISITES
Entrants shall have completed at least one intake in Learn to Sail Level Two or equivalent, be at least 12yrs of age and be members of Manly Sailing Club.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - ILCA (LASER)
ABOUT THE COURSE
This is an intermediate sailing program targeted at participants who are keen to develop their sailing and in particular, improve their racing repertoire.  It's the right course for sailors wanting to develop the confidence and competence required to improve from an intermediate club level to a regatta race level.
​
Participants in this program will be given guidance to attend pre-selected away from home regattas throughout the sailing calendar and it is expected that, given we are developing racing skills in this course, they are supported to attend such events.

The expectation is that in between coaching sessions, sailors will train on the water without a coach.  Creating this culture of sailors getting on the water together outside of scheduled coaching sessions requires more support from parents, and we believe that this is fundamental in keeping sailors in the sport.

Sailors entering this course should provide their own boat and equipment.

Entrants typically enter this program following the RCSF Development O'pen Skiff.

Sailors must also be members of the Manly Sailing Club AND sailors are expected to attend Club Racing.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM - iqfoil
ABOUT THE COURSE
Get started with the exciting world of IQ Foil windsurfing! Our beginner course is designed to introduce you to the basics of foiling, providing you with the skills and confidence to ride smoothly above the water. Learn essential techniques such as balance, foil control and setup from Ben Rist, a top NZ IQ Foil sailor.

PREREQUISITES
This course is aimed for teenagers transitioning from traditional windsurfing and wingfoiling.  Participant's will require their own equipment and shall also be members of Manly Sailing Club.

In this course, participants will continue to develop the skills from Learn to Wing.  The focus will be on learning to tack and gybe.

This is an intermediate sailing program targeted at participants who are keen to develop their sailing skills in a double-handed boat.

Participants in this program will be given guidance to attend pre-selected away from home regattas throughout the sailing calendar and it is expected that, given we are developing racing skills in this course, they are supported to attend such events.

The expectation is that in between coaching sessions, sailors will train on the water without a coach.  Creating this culture of sailors getting on the water together outside of scheduled coaching sessions requires more support from parents, and we believe that this is fundamental in keeping sailors in the sport.

Sailors entering this course will have access to the use of the RCSF owned RS Feva boats.

Participants in this program will be given guidance to attend pre-selected away from home regattas throughout the sailing calendar and it is expected that, given we are developing racing skills in this course, they are supported to attend such events.

The expectation is that in between coaching sessions, sailors will train on the water without a coach.  Creating this culture of sailors getting on the water together outside of scheduled coaching sessions requires more support from parents, and we believe that this is fundamental in keeping sailors in the sport.

Charter of RCSF owned 29er boats is possible.

With a strong focus on boat handling, speed, and racecraft, you’ll build the skills and confidence needed to compete at the WASZP Nationals at Manly in March next year.

Remember, sailing clothing is dependent on seasonal conditions.  For Learn to Sail applicants, the RCSF can provide life-jackets, helmets and spray tops, but not wetsuits.

Parental Involvement

For all our courses, it's important that parents/caregivers participate in the day to day operations and provide on and off water support for each coaching session.  The RCSF offers training and induction will be given.

SCHOLARSHIP

​An opportunity exists for applicant's in certain circumstances to be offered a scholarship to subsidise them through the course and or provide a boat for a complete season.

​A scholarship will only be offered after consideration from an initial interview or at the completion of a Learn to Sail course.

​The complete details of a scholarship will only be revealed to an applicant at the time of an offer being made.  Any decision to award a scholarship will be made at the sole discretion of the RCSF.
